While three-wheeled motorcycles share many traits with two-wheeled motorcycles, the extra wheel has a huge effect on the bike’s overall handling. Those who are used to a more typical motorcycle are especially likely to be thrown off-guard, since many of their learned habits are now incorrect. This list of tips from Steel City Harley-Davidson® can help you improve your three-wheeled motorcycle riding tips.

Starting the Three-Wheeled Motorcycle

When starting a three-wheeled motorcycle, first engage the brakes and the clutch. Once you’ve shifted into first gear, release the brakes. Keep your hands on the clutch as you slowly increase the throttle. Once you’ve built up enough speed, release the motorcycle’s clutch.

Shifting Gears

If you’ve never shifted gears on a three-wheeled motorcycle, the process is very similar to shifting gears on an automatic transmission car. First, drop the throttle and engage the clutch. Shift to your desired gear and then let the clutch go. It’s very easy to lose control of the vehicle while shifting gears, so only attempt to shift gears while driving in a straight line if possible. If your engine stalls, then you’re not shifting gears correctly.

Turning A Three-Wheeled Motorcycle

If you’re operating a three-wheeled motorcycle and you see a turn ahead, slow down a bit to make the turn easier. Take the turn itself at a constant speed. Don’t hit the throttle again until you hit the throttle. Sharp turning makes it more likely that you’ll accidentally lose control of the vehicle.

Stopping on a Three-Wheeled Motorcycle

Three-wheeled motorcycles are bigger and heavier than two-wheeled models since the additional weight makes stopping more difficult. Give yourself plenty of stopping distance and avoid hard braking, since hard braking can cause your brakes to lock up.

Practice, Practice, Practice

It takes time to really get good at controlling a three-wheeled motorcycle. If you’ve never ridden one of these vehicles before, find a vacant lot or other safe area in which to practice your skills. Eventually, you’ll be able to control your three-wheeled motorcycle with no trouble at all!
